So, I tried to install a nVidia driver (using sudo apt search nvidia-driver).

Xrandr: on a fresh install of ubuntu using the default nouveau drivers, xrandr returns an error of "cannot open display". Ubuntu-drivers (command): -install advises that there are no drivers to install, -list returns absolutely nothing, -devices returns nothing (I understand the command is ubuntu-drivers devices, the "-" is for readability) So I have spent the last few days looking in to getting a good video driver. The card itself works- prior to installing Ubuntu, my Dad had put ChromeOs on it and was totally usable. What doesn't work: obviously there is an issue with the graphics card. All other components of the desktop work- keyboard, mouse, wifi. Hitting ctrl+alt+f3 brings up the TTY and I can use it all day. The command line interface works perfectly. The problem is they can be hard to locate at times due to the constant screen tearing. I'm able to click on buttons, move sliders, etc and they all respond as they should. Ubuntu is installed and the GUI *can* be "used". lspci returns the following kernel mod: nvidiafb, nouveau. My computer has a nVidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430 (circa 2004/2005). I've spent the past few days Googling and have not come up with any real good solutions. As you can see in the image I've attached to this post, there are some significant display issues when it comes to using the GUI. I recently installed Ubuntu 20.04.1 on a Windows Vista era desktop I got for free. Any ideas to make GUI usable at a reasonable resolution, or is the graphics card too old? Tried to use a 4xx series nVidia driver via apt install- worked (stable GUI) but locked resolution to 640x480 (tried but unable to add resolution modes). TL DR- I have an ancient nVidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430 (circa 2004/2005) in a free computer I got recently.
